Nox Borealis

How do you get to the heart of the physicality of sound? That is the question composer Maija Hynninen explores in Lumen Boréal. During the performance, musicians spread out across different halls, and the architecture becomes an ally of the sonic experience: you move through the work as if you were inside the sound itself. You can retreat with a soloist and lose yourself in a fragment, or hear how the ensemble, supplemented by live recordings, performs the entire work in another room. This unique event centres on spatial, sonic and visual exploration. The outstanding Ensemble Hopper, conducted by François Deppe, also performs Kaija Saariaho’s colourful Lichtbogen, in which the audience is fully immersed in Jean Baptiste Barrière’s accompanying video installation, Nox Borealis
